RECOMMENDATION:

Recommendation Concerning the Medical Examiner Search - Janice P. Gilley, County Administrator

That the Board discuss and support the Medical Examiner Search Committee actions, from the January 22, 2020, Medical Examiner Search Committee meeting.

BACKGROUND:

The Medical Examiner Search Committee met on January 22, 2020, to re-initiate the search for a new Chief Medical Examiner. The consultant hired to conduct the search provided a presentation on the major issues that needed to be resolved to successfully recruit a new Chief.

An acceptable Contract
An increase to the Fiscal Year 2019/2020 budget from current (2.1 M) to approximately $2.8M
An acceptable Medical Examiner facility

The Medical Examiner Search Committee passed the attached Resolution seeking support from the Boards of County Commissioners to agree to work with the future Chief Medical Examiner. The financial impact of the budget increase for Escambia County is approximately $300K annually.

BUDGETARY IMPACT:

The financial impact of the budget increase for Escambia County is approximately $300K annually. Funds are available in the Fiscal Year 201-2020 General Fund (001) budget.

LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS/SIGN-OFF:

The County Attorney has been consulted on the actions of the Medical Examiner Search Committee.

PERSONNEL:

N/A

POLICY/REQUIREMENT FOR BOARD ACTION:

Pursuant to State Statute 406.08, FL Statute, Boards of County Commissioners are responsible for the salaries, expenses and costs of the Medical Examiner. Board action is necessary for approval of this budgetary increase.

IMPLEMENTATION/COORDINATION:

The County Administrator's Office will notify the consultant of Escambia County's position.
