The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications.
Meeting in regular session on June 20, 2019, the Board approved the ADA Transition Plan - Title II. To assist in implementing the Transition Plan, the Board, at its November 7, 2019, regular meeting, approved $100,000 from Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) IV to implement ADA-compliant upgrades to the County's roadway system and approved transferring funds into the ADA Upgrades for Compliance Project. Staff plans to issue four or five Work Orders to approved contractors to provide the ADA-compliant upgrades.
Staff anticipates issuing all the Work Orders totaling the $100,000 within the current fiscal year. All commission districts will receive at least one Work Order for ADA-compliant upgrades. Attached for reference are the locations proposed for Work Order #1.
