RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation Concerning a Letter of Support Requesting that FDOT Address Crash Occurrences in the Town of Century Along Century Boulevard at Jackson Street - Joy D. Blackmon, P.E., Public Works Department Director

That the Board authorize the Chairman to sign a Letter of Support requesting that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) address crash occurrences in the Town of Century along Century Boulevard at Jackson Street.
BACKGROUND:
Escambia County Transportation and Traffic Operations (TTO) staff recommends that the Board sign the attached Letter of Support requesting FDOT address the existing roadway hazard issue at the subject intersection of Century Boulevard and Jackson Street in the Town of Century. There has been a history of crashes at the subject site, with two in the past month. It appears that the slope and design of the roadway at this location is such that heavy trucks traveling in the outside (right) lane have difficulty navigating the curve at the posted speed limit of 35 mph, especially at night.

TTO Staff supports the Department’s proposed improvements intended to address this issue on Century Boulevard. In the short term, sign improvements to warn trucks and motorists of the tipping hazard, advanced warning signage with flashing beacons of the curve, and/or advanced warning signage advising trucks to use the inside (left) lane are effective solutions, and should be instituted immediately. In the long term, super-elevation of the roadway on the approach to and through the curve is greatly needed to counteract lateral acceleration produced by the curve and should be implemented as soon as possible.
