Recommendation Concerning Scheduling Of A Public Hearing On Thursday, July 23, 2015, At 5:32 P.M. To Consider An Ordinance Amending Chapter 90, Article V, Section 90-201 Through 90-206 Providing For An Extension Of The Local Option Gas Tax (6-cent fuel tax) For A Period Of Ten (10) Years And Four (4) Months Commencing On September 1, 2016

That the Board authorize the scheduling of a public hearing on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 5:32 p.m. to consider an Ordinance amending Chapter 90, Article V, Section 90-201 through 90-206 providing for an extension of the Local Option Gas Tax (6-cent fuel tax) for a period of ten (10) years and four (4) months commencing on September 1, 2016.

BACKGROUND:

Pursuant to the authority granted in §336.025(1)(a), Florida Statutes, the Board of County Commissioners previously enacted a Local Option Gas Tax (6-cent fuel tax), which was originally levied on September 1, 1996, for a period of ten (10) years and subsequently renewed for an additional ten (10) year period through August 31, 2016. This 6-cent local option fuel tax is levied upon every gallon of motor fuel sold in Escambia County on an annual basis. Per the authorizing statute, these funds may only be spent on transportation related expenditures, which has provided funding for road paving and repair, drainage, bridge maintenance, and other transportation related projects within the County. The proposed Ordinance will renew the Local Option Gas Tax for an additional ten (10) years and four (4) months commencing on September 1, 2016.
