BACKGROUND:
Escambia County has been utilizing the Myrtle Grove Fire Station, located at 7209 Lillian Highway, for fire protection and rescue services. The building belongs to Myrtle Grove Volunteer Fire Department Inc., and was constructed in 1977.
On June 24, 2016, Risk Manager Bob Dye advised that all firefighters should move out of the station until further testing and a remediation plan could be established due to firefighter complaints of illnesses possibly related to mold exposure. The career firefighters were relocated to the Osceola Fire Station and the volunteers were urged to also relocate to any of the surrounding stations.
On July 8, 2016 Escambia County received a Report of Environmental Consulting Services from Professional Service Industries, Inc. The report included recommendations for the repair of water intrusion areas and fungal cleaning/remediation. The company additionally recommended that the fire station should not be inhabited until such repairs, cleaning and remediation could be completed.
