CAO Approval:

RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation Concerning a Resolution of Support for Renaming a Portion of US Highway 29 for Mr. Maceo Perkins - Joy Jones, P.E., Public Works Department Director

That the Board take the following action:

A. Adopt and authorize the Chairman to sign the Resolution of Support for renaming a portion of US Highway 29 (from Cox Road to Sigler Road) for Mr. Maceo Perkins; and

B. Authorize the County Administrator, or designee, to transmit the signed Resolution to the State of Florida for consideration.
BACKGROUND:
In July 2017, Maceo Perkins became employed with Broad Spectrum, Inc. (presently d/b/a Ferrovial) as a highway worker performing service and repair on roadways and other contracted assets (medians, signs, guardrails, fences, and bridges). The Florida Department of Transportation contracted with Broad Spectrum to perform roadway construction along US Highway 29 (Century Boulevard). On April 6, 2018, at approximately 12:16 p.m., Maceo was tragically struck and killed while performing roadway construction on US Highway 29 (Century Boulevard) in the proximity of Sigler Road.

In 2017, Maceo Perkins and his beloved wife, Laquinda, moved to Pensacola to be near their parents. Maceo had a distinct passion for cooking and also enjoyed football and traveling. He awoke early every morning to work out, read scripture, and occasionally worked on his plan to open a local Wing Spot franchise. Everyone who knew Maceo always had wonderful things to say about his positive and upbeat character and his respectful and friendly nature. In July of 2017, Maceo became employed with Broad Spectrum, Inc. (presently d/b/a Ferrovial) as a highway worker performing service and repair on roadways and other contracted assets (medians, signs, guardrails, fences, and bridges).

In honor of Maceo and his dedicated service to the public, and to recognize the challenges and often times adverse conditions that roadway construction workers experience, the Board requests that the State of Florida rename a portion of US Highway 29, from Cox Road to Sigler Road, as "Maceo Perkins Parkway" in memory of Mr. Maceo Perkins.
