The Selection Committee for the Director of Corrections’ position met to review the eighty-six applications on Monday, June 11, 2018, and moved five candidates forward to interview. On Friday, July 6, 2018, the Selection Committee without member Isaiah Dennard interviewed three of the five candidates and unanimously ranked William R. Powell as the top candidate. Prior to the interviews, two of the five candidates withdrew their applications for personal reasons.
The Selection Committee consisted of: Jack R. Brown, County Administrator; Matthew F. Coughlin, Assistant County Administrator; Chief Deputy Chip Simmons, Escambia County Sheriff’s Department; Robin Wright, 1st Judicial Circuit Court Administrator; Chief Cornita Riley, Orange County Corrections; and Isaiah Dennard, Jail Services Director, Florida Sheriff’s Association.
The position was advertised nationally for over 60 days. Advertisements for the position were placed on the following websites: Myescambia.com, Corrections, Discovercorrections, the Florida Association of Counties (FAC), the Florida League of Cities, the Florida Sheriff's Association, Indeed.com, the National Association of Counties (NACO), Ziprecruiter, American Corrections Association, the American Jail Association, the Large Jail Network, and the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice (NABCJ).
