RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation Concerning a Resolution of Support for Renaming a Portion of State Road 95 (US Highway 29) for Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Milan D. Hendrix - Joy Jones, P.E., Engineering Department Director

That the Board take the following action concerning a Resolution of Support for renaming a portion of State Road (SR) 95 (US Highway 29) from Neal Road to SR 10A (Nine Mile Road) for Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Milan D. Hendrix:

A. Adopt and authorize the Chairman to sign the Resolution of Support for renaming a portion of State Road (SR) 95 (US Highway 29) from Neal Road to SR 10A (Nine Mile Road) for Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Milan D. Hendrix; and

B. Authorize the County Administrator or designee to transmit the signed Resolution to the State of Florida for consideration.

This portion of roadway is located in Commission District 5.
BACKGROUND:
Per Florida Statutes, redesignation (or renaming) requests for roadways or segments of roadways of the State Highway System are to receive support from the respective local government body via Resolution, and subsequent approval from the State Legislature prior to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) allowing a redesignation on state roadways or roadway segments.

This specific request is to redesignate the portion of State Road (SR) 95 (US Highway 29) from Neal Road to SR 10A (Nine Mile Road) from Neal Road to Nine Mile Road as “Trooper Milan D. Hendrix Memorial Highway.”

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) Trooper Milan D. Hendrix was on routine patrol duty when he was tragically killed in a car accident on June 1, 1989, at the youthful age of 37. Trooper Hendrix, the first FHP trooper killed in the line of duty in the Florida Panhandle, was an Allentown resident and an easy-going, yet hard-working man who faithfully served the citizens of Florida from March 1980 to June 1989.

The State Legislature, during its 2019 session, approved the request for the redesignation; upon BCC approval of this Resolution, FDOT will proceed with the formal redesignation.

FDOT anticipates conducting the redesignation ceremony in Fall 2019.
