Recommendation Concerning a Resolution Relating to the Recreational Red Snapper Fishing Season Opening Dates - J. Taylor "Chips" Kirschenfeld, Director, Department of Natural Resources Management

That the Board adopt and authorize the Chairman to sign the Resolution relating to the Recreational Red Snapper Fishing Season Opening Dates as brought forth by the Department of Natural Resources Management at the request of the Escambia County Marine Advisory Committee.

BACKGROUND:

At the July 8, 2019, meeting of the Escambia County Marine Advisory Committee, the Committee passed a Resolution regarding the start date of the red snapper fishing season for recreational anglers in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2019, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) set the opening dates of June 1, 2019, for recreational anglers fishing aboard charter boats, and June 11, 2019, for recreational anglers fishing aboard privately-owned vessels.

By allowing one group of recreational anglers to harvest red snapper 11 days before allowing other recreational anglers, FWC created the impression of favoritism and unfairness. Although the number of days of allowable red snapper harvest for recreational anglers fishing from charter boats and private boats are not equal, the seasons will close on different dates.

No budgetary impact associated with this Recommendation.

The Resolution was drafted by the County Attorney's Office and approved as to form and legal sufficiency by Kia M. Johnson, Assistant County Attorney.
