RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation Concerning a Resolution of Support for Renaming a Portion of Interstate 10 for Deputy Don Cook - Janice Gilley, County Administrator

That the Board take the following action concerning a Resolution of Support for renaming a portion of Interstate 10 from US 29/SR95 to SR291 (Davis Highway) for Deputy Don Cook:

A.
Adopt and authorize the Chairman to sign the Resolution of Support for renaming a portion of Interstate 10 from US 29/SR95 to SR291 (Davis Highway) for Deputy Don Cook; and

B. Authorize the County Administrator or designee to transmit the signed Resolution to the State of Florida for consideration.

This portion of the roadway is located in Commission District 3 from US29 to I-110, with a small section in District 4 on the north side of I-10 from Carpenter’s Creek to I-110.
BACKGROUND:
Per Florida Statutes, redesignation (or renaming) requests for roadways or segments of roadways of the State Highway System are to receive support from the local government body via Resolution, and subsequent approval from the State Legislature prior to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) allowing a redesignation on state roadways or roadway segments.

This specific request is to redesignate the portion of Interstate 10 from US 29/SR95 to SR291 (Davis Highway) as “Deputy Don Cook Memorial Highway.”

On December 3, 1988, while monitoring his radio, Deputy Donald R. Cook learned of a high-speed pursuit of armed robbers on I-10 in Santa Rosa County, heading west into Escambia County and he responded by setting up a roadblock on I-10 in the west bound lane between US 29 and I-110. Deputy Cook exited his vehicle in order to set up the roadblock and the pursuit continued toward the roadblock where he was tragically struck and killed. At the time of his unfortunate death, Deputy Cook was a five-year veteran of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
